ADS770: Econ. & Fin. Policy Leadership in a Global Society

Course Description

In this course, candidates will study various national and regional economies in the context of
their macro-environments and will analyze their respective impact on the mega global environment as well as the reciprocal impact of global economics upon individual nation states. Specific focus will be given to global economic issues such as unemployment, inflation, interest
rates, and exchange rates and their impact on capital markets, foreign exchange markets, and labor markets. In addition, the international financial environment in which contemporary
international businesses operate and in which financial service providers compete will be
assessed.

Course Objectives

  1. Develop a broad understanding of multilateral and bilateral political-economy
    relationships.
  2. Analyze the historical development of global economic integration, global economic
    geography, major institutional features of contemporary international economic and
    financial relations.
  3. Understand the way changing macro-economic conditions in world economy affect
    economic growth, inflation, interest rates behavior, exchange rate determination, global competitiveness, unemployment, and the trade accounts.
  4. Understand how public policy influences the ability of an international organization to
    be effective.
  5. Comprehend how developments in world economy affect particular industry
    environments, international business environment, international economic institutions, national and regional trade policies and developments, trends in foreign markets, and international monetary problems.
  6. Understand global financial environments and their impact on: the balance of
    payments and international economic linkages, exchange rates and exchange rate parity conditions, foreign exchange risks, and managing the exposure to international economic risks.
  7. Understand the political, ethical, legal, and multi-national contexts in which
    international organizations function.
  8. Evaluate current conflicts of interest, and predict likely future evolution of economic
    and financial world systems as well as their impact on economic and financial policy
    leadership in a global society.
